Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2020.
This dissertation argues that Eph 6:10-20 is a summary exhortation that calls the church to engage corporately in spiritual warfare to protect its oneness against the divisive attacks of the powers with the resources of God. The thesis is sensitive to the central themes of unity and the powers and how they function in the summary section of Eph 6:10-20 and the letter's overall flow of thought. The argument is based on data from the letter's historical, theological, and literary context. Chapter 1 introduces the basis for this research topic, the thesis, the methodology, and a brief outline of the work's content. Chapter 2 examines the concept of corporate unity as the central message of the letter. Specifically, this chapter looks at how the theological, ethical, conceptual, and textual emphases of Ephesians highlight the need to protect corporate oneness. Chapter 3, using historical and textual data, makes the case that Ephesus was highly influenced by Artemis and the powers, and that this environment was the origin of the division in the church. Furthermore, Ephesians presents the powers, with Artemis as their chief representative, as a potential foil to God's plan for cosmic oneness as they attempt to disrupt the God-created unity of the church. Chapter 4 argues that Eph 6:10-20 is a summary exhortation for the entire letter. It shows that this section is connected to the rest of the letter. In addition, it gives several reasons for viewing Eph 6:10-20 as a summary. Finally, it provides a detailed examination of Eph 6:10-20 in order to determine the exact nature of the spiritual warfare which the church is exhorted to pursue. Chapter 5 is a summary of the dissertation's findings and provides some implications and avenues of further research.
