It is common for scholars to view "the work" in the Fourth Gospel as Christ making atonement for the sins of his people on the cross. This would be consistent with the mission of Christ as the "sent one" from the Father who will give his life as the Shepherd for the sheep. In The Completed Work of Christ in John 17:4, I argue that a proleptic reading of John 17:4 is not in view for Christ or the evangelist. Instead, John 17:4 reflectively refers to the work to reveal God the Father, both publicly and privately. I read the completed work reflectively as I consider the development of the work of Christ in the prologue, the narrative of his presentation to the world and the disciples, and the passion narrative. I argue for a perfective reading of the aorist verbs in John 17:4, considering both the aspect of the narrative from John's perspective in 17:1 and of the discourse from Jesus's perspective in 17:4.Methodologically, in order to draw a conclusion of a perfective reading of the verbs, I will compare contemporary NT Greek verbal aspect theories, also contrasting them with previous theories on the aorist tense. I will examine and categorize variations of proleptic and reflective views of John 17:4 since the time of Augustine. I then will explore thematic and exegetical considerations that contribute to reading the completion of Christ's work perfectively. I will provide a comparative analysis of the use of terms for the Father in John 1-16 to John 18- 21 that supports the exegetical and thematic study. I will argue that a reflective reading of John 17:4 allows me to develop a reading strategy for the Fourth Gospel.
