There are many nonprofit social service programs designed to help individuals become stable and learn life skills. This qualitative phenomenological study examined the African American fathers' lived experience with fatherhood programs. The goal was to understand how African American fathers perceive and experience the program, management, cultural competence, and the effectiveness of program organization. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data, addressing the research question: What are the perceptions of African American fathers participating in fatherhood programs? The sample consisted of 10 African American fathers ages 18 to 60. The design of the study is transcendental phenomenology; the methodology is qualitative. Purposive sampling was the primary sampling strategy for the study. Snowball sampling occurred to recruit additional participants. Phenomenology protocols were applied in this study to explore and analyze the lived experiences and perceptions of African American fathers participating in fatherhood programs. The research findings included the emergence of four phenomenological themes: motivation to become a better father and man, sadness and regret being an absent father, insecurities in communication, and gratitude from the program. Two subthemes of gratitude from the program also surfaced: thankfulness for brotherly support and appreciation of resources. Recommendations for future research should include a different region of the United States and, a mixed race of participants. This study showed that fatherhood programs provide training and resources to be better fathers.
