Pecan farming generates a lot of by-products during pruning such as woody branches, shells and husks. Open burning of those pecan by-products may negatively affect public health and the environment. This study explores the use of beneficial fungi such as species of Trichoderma for degrading pecan. Three species of Trichoderma (T. longibrachiatum, T. harzianum and T. virens) were evaluated for their ability to decompose pecan wood. Pecan wood was inoculated with each species of Trichoderma and mass loss was observed after 12 weeks. Addition of urea as a nitrogen source resulted in a higher mass loss. Overall, pecan wood weight loss varied from 21% to 36%, with the highest mass loss observed when pecan wood was amended with urea. Differences between both treatments ( with and with no urea) were statistically significant (P=0.014). The three species of Trichoderma were also assessed for production of enzymes involved in degradation of wood components (lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose). Qualitative tests were positive for laccase, suggesting that Trichoderma spp. are capable of degrading lignin. Moreover, qualitative tests were positive for cellulose, indicating production of cellulase enzymes by Trichoderma. A cellulase fluorimetric assay was carried out to determine the enzymatic activities of Trichoderma. Higher activity was observed from T. longibrachiatum followed by T. harzianum then T. virens. The effect of nitrogen source (urea) was also studied. A slightly higher activity was observed compared to cellulase activity without urea. Overall, results from this study are promising and the use of Trichoderma species can be optimized to successfully decompose pecan wood.
