Can there be peace among religions? Is it really possible to achieve a peaceful co-existence of diverse religious adherents in a society? What if one's vision of peace and understanding of justice are deeply rooted in a Christian tradition and therefore fundamentally different from the others whose way of life is profoundly influenced by Confucianism? This dissertation stems from wrestling with these questions. This dissertation argues that by conducting an academic practice of "dialogue" defined by "mutual challenge and enrichment" between the concepts, values, and practices of Confucianism' Harmonious Peace and the Christian ethic of Just Peace theory we may find fresh insights for interreligious peacebuilding. This dialogue can lead us to a more comprehensive understanding of the concept of peace, mutually enriched ethical principles, and more effective practices toward peaceful, harmonious, and just societies. In doing so, this dissertation challenges the hegemony of the dominant theoretical approaches to interreligious dialogue and suggests a different methodology: to not only study and compare religious ideas based on religious texts, but also to seriously take account of their historical contexts. In this it is essential to pay attention to ethical principles and the efficacy of suggested practices. Therefore, it identifies the distinctive characteristics and challenges of the religious contexts of East Asian societies, due to the centuries-long influence of Confucian rule. Then, it attempts to study Confucianism as a historical phenomenon and identifies some of the intriguing characteristics of Confucian teachings on peace and harmony compared to Christian ethics. Based on these studies, this dissertation explores how Harmonious Peace may challenge and enrich the concept, ethical principles, and practices for Just Peace. Also, it discusses how contemporary politicized Confucian influence in East Asian societies can be challenged by Just Peace and how their struggle for establishing a harmonious society may be inspired by the dialogue. In conclusion, this dissertation argues that the possibility for interreligious peacebuilding in East Asian societies and beyond lies not in establishing a "global standard" for peace nor in a replacement of one by the other. It asserts that it is essential to promote continuous interreligious dialogue which can lead us to mutual learning and a syncretic merge of ideas, ethical principles, and practices for peace.
