The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to examine the current perceptions of online graduate degrees by academic hiring managers when making hiring decisions. The population studied consisted of deans, department chairs, human resource directors, and faculty at colleges and universities with AACSB and IACBE business program accreditation in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Participants were sent a 36-question electronic survey to complete which utilized demographic, scale, ranking, and open-ended questions to collect responses from 106 academic hiring managers. The study found that the majority of the participants would consider hiring a candidate who had earned an online graduate degree. However, the modality in which a graduate degree was earned played a significant role in the faculty hiring process. When presented with two otherwise equally qualified candidates 82% of the respondents would hire the candidate who earned a traditional graduate degree over a candidate who earned an online graduate degree. It was determined that participants from IACBE accredited colleges and universities were more accepting of online graduate degrees than those from AACSB schools as an education credential for a faculty position. Furthermore, it was determined that significant relationships existed between the independent variables of acceptability of online degrees, number of years worked in higher education, whether a participant's school offered online degrees, and whether participants had earned an online degree; and the dependent variable of perceptions of online degrees. Finally, results indicated that both institutional and business school accreditation influences hiring managers' perceptions of online graduate degrees.
