In the United States, the incidence of perinatal depression is approximately 11.5% annually. Biologic, social, and psychological factors contribute to the tremendous physical and emotional changes that a woman experiences during pregnancy and the postnatal period potentially leading to perinatal depression. The United States Preventive Services Task Force now recommends that clinical providers refer or provide psychological counseling to women who are pregnant or in the postnatal period and at risk for perinatal depression. Currently, the cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) appointments offered at an obstetrics and gynecology clinical care center (Ob/Gyn CCC) in the Mid-Atlantic region are only available 1 day a week. In addition, CBT appointments often do not coincide with scheduled prenatal or postpartum appointments. This barrier to care associated with the accessibility of mental health services was addressed using the United States Veteran's Affairs Mindfulness Coach (USVAMC) mobile smart-device application as an adjunct to CBT. CBT and mindfulness-based interventions modified to meet the needs of women diagnosed with perinatal depression contribute to improvement of mental well-being. Therefore, using the Doctor of Nursing Practice Essentials and Pender's Health Promotion Model, the aim of this evidence-based project was to introduce the USVAMC as an adjunct to CBT. The USVAMC was used to improve outcomes in women diagnosed with perinatal depression as well as to address the barriers to availability of mental healthcare services.
