Women often report negative feelings about the way that legal institutions respond to their calls for assistance in addressing the abuse they receive from their partners. Gender bias and negative attitudes toward women's rights persist even among our country's leaders. The result continues to be seen in the pay differential that exists within our society between men and women and in laws that specifically seek to diminish women's equality. This legislated and "built in" attacks on women's rights can motivate one to lose faith in our established cultural institutions' abilities to protect the victims of domestic violence. This study examines attitudes and practices of those working in one of two institution of law that regularly interact with victims of domestic violence. Twenty (n = 20) police and deputies along with 21 court attorneys volunteered to complete an attitude questionnaire and to be interviewed about their practices and attitudes toward victims of domestic violence (DV). Each participant was provided a narrative describing a probable incident of DV and were required to report their probable thoughts and actions if they were to be called upon to address this case. The results identified some consistent biases that existed in the reference groups attitudes and actions towards female victims of domestic violence. Attorneys and law enforcement officers were more similar than different as reflected in the similar perceptions of DV events and the assignment of punishment.
