Given Beethoven's enduring legacy in music history, one would assume that no stone has been left unturned when it comes to his music. But most nineteenth-century arrangements of his works have neither appeared in modern editions nor received the socio-historical evaluation they deserve. It is only in recent years that recordings and publications of new editions are beginning to appear. Some of these works were arranged by close associates of Beethoven, other composers, and even the composer himself, and as such, they cover a wide range of compositional quality. The seemingly endless variation in instrumentation and style reveals the pivotal role arrangements played in making Beethoven's music available and inclusive to as broad an audience as possible. This paper discusses the culture of arrangements from the early nineteenth century and explores the art of transcribing through the arrangements of Beethoven's friends Carl Czerny, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Ignaz Moscheles and Ferdinand Ries. The ways these composers balanced fidelity to Beethoven's score with idiomatically arranging for new mediums will be discussed. By changing the instrumentation of a work, the selection and distribution of thematic material, instrumental timbres, and textures all become open to the craftsmanship and imagination of the arranger, thereby making the arrangement not merely a literal translation but a re-genesis that offers a new view of the work. Through these arrangements, we can glean insights into how people heard and engaged with music in Beethoven's time and gain new perspectives on these canonical works.
