News coverage about athletes raise a concern because news outlets may use negative stereotypes to portray athletes to the public in inaccurate ways. This study brings attention to the ways in which the media relies upon these stereotypes to tell their stories, with particular focus on athletes accused of crimes. While there is considerable research on stereotypes, related to both race and sport, my study relies primarily on the intersection of stereotypes and their effect on news portrayals of these athletes. Three questions guide my study: 1) Are stereotypes a prevalent part of these stories? 2) How does race or sport affect the way stereotypes are used to shape the narratives in the story? And 3) How does the political perspective of the news outlet affect the type and/or frequency of stereotypes used? I pursue these questions using cultivation theory and critical race theory to guide my research. The data for this study derives from an analysis of 3 different news sources, examining 2 stories from each source, as they relate to the criminal cases of 4 athletes (N = 24). Through a content analysis, this study identifies and describes the frequency and most commonly referenced stereotypes within my sample of 24 different articles from 2016-2018, as well as, those stereotypes that were not relied on in these crime narratives.
