The community policing model has been celebrated by police executives, scholars, and communities alike for bringing together stakeholders not only to reduce and solve crimes, but also as a tool to combat complex societal issues since the mid-eighties (Brown, 1989). The purpose of this research was to increase a level of understanding of how executive leaders specifically, that of the African American community, lead urban police departments in Florida. To achieve such goals, the author built upon the scholarly literature and the scholarly foundations put forth by Doctor Daniel Lawson's 2010 inquiry, Community Policing and Leadership: Perceptions of Urban Police Chiefs. The author's research was structured in a five-chapter, multiple case study methodology designed to maximize the data collected to answer the research question(s). Such in-depth research into the scope of communities and that of police organizations contributed to the scholarly understandings of both the theory of community policing, and that of the African American Executive Leader. The state of American policing is at a pivotal crossroad. Too frequently the rhetoric between citizens, organizations, and the police has escalated well beyond dialogue. The expectations of this study were not purely fulfillment of an academic requirement, but that of contribution. Contribution to the continued pursuit of collective solutions between that of executive police leaders, the men and women of law enforcement, and the communities which they serve through a variety of transparent community practices.
