The goal of this dissertation is to better understand the personal psychology of nationalism using social media data. A review of previous scholarly literature on nationalism reveals that: a) most of this work has focused on the rise of this phenomenon during periods of extreme sociopolitical change such as revolutions and coups; b) there has been a historic aversion to psychologistic accounts of nationalism in favor of structural accounts, and c) the majority of studies are theoretical in nature, with little empirical work done in this area. The current study examines the psychological markers of Twitter users with nationalistic tendencies in the US and the UK during a period of reasonable and relative stability, comparing them with the psychological markers of control groups. We used the 2015 version of the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC2015) to analyze a corpus of tweets from experimental and control groups in the US and the UK, comparing several affective indicators including: anger, certainty, anxiety, positive emotions, and negative emotions between groups within and across countries. The study finds significant differences in affective indicators of the nationalists in the US and the UK, compared to other control groups. The findings of the study contribute to a better understanding of the possible psychological underpinnings of nationalistic tendencies, confirm some previous findings on the psychology of conservatism, while contradicting others.
