The theme of metamorphosis has long been a topic studied in reference to writers such as Ovid and Kafka, but the juxtaposition of mutability and metamorphosis has unique resonance in the poetics of Russian modernists, especially Anna Akhmatova. Mutability as a theme in poets such as John Keats has received a great deal of scholarly attention, with metamorphosis emerging as a quasi-solution/escape into an alternate state. Scholars such as Nancy Anderson have also focused on metamorphosis in Akhmatova's poetic achievements such as Requiem. Most scholars, however, do not foreground metamorphosis as a theme that connects Akhmatova's early literary endeavors with her later masterworks, providing evidence of a consistent if subtle influence of Keatsian odes on her emerging and mature poetics. This dissertation will read Akhmatova's early poems-especially "In Tsarskoe Selo" and "Like a White Stone in the Depths of a Well"-as developing a poetics of metamorphosis that will both make masterpieces like Requiem possible and enable her to respond to increasingly complex and horrific historical and personal circumstances. It will also illustrate the poetics of metamorphosis as influencing the literary endeavors of other Russian modernists such as Blok and Mandel'shtam. Much attention will be given to Requiem, Poem without a Hero, and Akhmatova's short poems during both the Silver Age and the early Soviet years. Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn," "Ode to a Nightingale," "To Autumn," and "On Seeing the Elgin Marbles" will receive some attention as well, as influencing the development of a distinct but related poetics in Russian modernism. Deconstructionism shapes this study's exploration of Russian modernist poetics as imagining mutability in terms of destruction-creation, as well as understanding the self as both historic and aesthetic, its identity as trace.
