Adverse life experiences can hinder a person's capacity for coping and adapting. As there is potential for coping abilities to be diminished for social workers in child welfare, self-care as a positive mechanism is considered to aid in increased coping. This action research project explored self-care for 32 child protective services investigators (CPSIs) who had exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). This mixed methodology action research study used logistic regression (quantitative) to examine the relationship between ACE scores for CPSIs and their self-care habits. This information was then used with a focus group to provide recommendations to address self-care practice among this population (qualitative). The quantitative research questions investigated self-care practice and ACE exposure among CPSIs. It was predicted that those CPSIs who were exposed to higher numbers of ACEs would participate in self-care activities less than those not exposed to ACEs. This hypothesis was not validated during this study. The level of ACE exposure did not result as a factor in practice for self-care. Seven focus group participants met together for the development of a self-care portfolio and allowed participants to be creative with the presentation of their thoughts and ideas around what should be included in the portfolio that would be valuable to a CPSI that needs information of self-care. In order to accomplish this, volunteers were asked to participate in a series of meetings to prompt development of the self-care portfolio tool. Future research is recommended to determine the effectiveness and benefits of said tool among CPSIs. It is recommended that future studies might consider the use of more recently developed tools for ACE scoring in data collection and stronger measures for self-care practice be employed.
