In three spatial dimensions mutually exchanging two particles leaves bosons and fermions as two possible classes of quantum particles. This is not the case in two spatial dimensions where a non-trivial mutual exchange allows particles to take on any arbitrary phase, known as anyons. Anyons come in two main varieties: Abelian and non-Abelian. Exchanging Abelian anyons generates a statistical phase, θST, which is a fractional multiple of 2π in the wave function. Exchange of non-Abelian anyons produces a non-commutative transformation of degenerate states within a Hilbert space. In this thesis we report on the first demonstration of anyonic braiding in a Fabry-Perot interference experiment in the quantum Hall regime. The quantum Hall Fabry-Perot interferometer is a Hall bar perturbed by two constrictions which introduce inter-edge tunneling. Anyonic braiding may be detected between the constrictions where the entrance or exit of a quasiparticle from within the interferometer changes the statistical content and causes a discrete phase change, known as a phase jump. The fractional quantum Hall effect is a novel collective phenomena in two dimensions with superfluid-like properties, and the quasiparticle excitations are anyons which exhibit both fractional charge and fractional statistics. The fractional quantum Hall state found at ν = 5/2 is postulated to be a paired Hall state created by p-wave BCS pairing of composite fermions with fractional charge e/4 and is theorized to support non-Abelian anyons as a Majorana mode. In the ν = 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect state, interference signals exhibit clear phase jumps of discrete angles π and π/4, which are the predicted statistical angles respectively for the flipping of the Majorana mode and the entry of an e/4 anyonic excitation in a paired Hall state. Our results show clear evidence of anyon braiding statistics in support of the postulated non-Abelian ground state at ν = 5/2.
