The environmental impact associated with carbon dioxide emissions has prompted a wide array of research projects aimed at the chemical reduction of CO2 or its conversion to useful feedstocks with solar energy. Using simple starting reagents, we have demonstrated that when methanol is exposed to visible light overnight in a glass reaction chamber pressurized with carbon dioxide and containing nanostructured cobalt particles, the sole nonpolar semi-volatile product is naphthalene. Naphthalene is the simplest polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, and can be used as a precursor to many other complex aromatics. Furthermore, we have investigated the impact of limiting the incident light's wavelength to various ranges has on the composition of the products formed.Further research was performed to prepare for a different line of reasoning regarding the nanostructured metal catalyst. Previously, iron, nickel, and cobalt were all examined as potential photocatalysts in the production of hydrocarbons from carbon dioxide and water. Each of those metals are Fischer-Tropsch metals, with the addition of ruthenium. In order to determine whether this trend was related to the Fischer-Tropsch metals, nanostructured ruthenium particles were attempted to be prepared through a decomposition method.
