The cultural products that constitute the core of my dissertation belong to popular visual culture (specifically, exvotos) and music (Mexican corridos and Neapolitan songs) in all their declinations and derivations, such as narcocorridos and "neomelodica" music. I show how these traditional artifacts, related to migration and organized crime, reflect common patterns of evolution in their (re)production and reception beyond their national context of origin, i.e. Mexico and Southern Italy. In other words, I claim that these artifacts are transitioning from a national to a transnational set, within a diasporic community that Indian-American anthropologist Arjun Appadurai identifies as modernity at large. The vital role played by media and migration in this break with the modern past creates new types of mobility and new images. My goal is to explore how globalization, large-scale transnational movements and new technologies, through the circulation of new discourses, have fostered a global shift in meaning with regard to the historically local phenomena of exvotos and corridos. As these products transform within global and transnational flows, novel repertoires and narratives emerge in relation to mobility, ideologies and landscapes.
