How many foreign language TV stations are broadcast to your local viewing area? Worthy of note is that Spanish is the only language spoken on these networks. No other foreign language is afforded this service. The most likely explanation is attributed to the reality that American society has slowly become more bicultural and bilingual, with Spanish being the most common language among bilinguals. The increase of a more bilingual culture is best illustrated by inspecting the increase of Spanish in the U.S. population, whether at home, work, or play. A language preference is all around us, all the time. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between a preference for English and Spanish. Specifically, this research studied how it was correlated with a leadership style as predicted by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). The study of leadership goes all the way back to the days of Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates. However, to this day, no studies have examined a correlation between leadership style and language preference. The outcome of this analysis may provide benefit to leaders at any level of authority. The results of the study indicate no significant relationship between a preference for Spanish or English, with MLQ leadership style. Language preference did not predict any of the MLQ styles. Be that as it may, data did suggest a significant relationship between being born outside the United States and two of the research variables. First, this group (50% Hispanic) was correlated with a preference to Spanish. This was expected. Secondly, this group was also associated with laissez-faire (absence of leadership). Further research is advocated to establish why being born outside the U.S. was linked to a preference towards no leadership, i.e. laissez-faire.
