The purpose of this scholarly project was to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of a mantra meditation intervention on reducing levels of anxiety in pregnant women with anxiety. This scholarly practice project utilized a quasi-experimental design. Obstetric participants were randomized to an experimental or control group. The intervention utilized three modules and a meditation log that captured qualitative information. Both groups were evaluated with the Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale (PASS) pre- and post-test. The dependent variable of interest was mantra meditation and the independent variable was anxiety. The study found that there was no statistically significant decrease in anxiety between the experimental versus the control group in overall PASS scores or in subscale scores; however, there was a statistically significant reduction in anxiety of the overall PASS scores and in the subscale of Excessive Worry and Specific Fears subscale within both groups and in the subscale of Acute Trauma and Adjustment for the control group. Qualitative themes noted indicate improved ability to focus on the mantra and noted improvements in self-regulation of mood, sleep, and concentration as the study progressed. This study supports the need for further exploration of web-based interventions for anxiety during pregnancy.
