The purpose for this qualitative descriptive study was to explore participants' description about their experience with learning and utilizing mindfulness techniques to reduce anxiety and improve mindfulness processes including non-judgmental awareness, non-reactivity and/or emotional regulation, from individuals who participated in a voluntary addiction intensive outpatient program in a northeastern region of the United States. Participants were diagnosed with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) with anxiety, aged 18-65, and learned mindfulness techniques in group therapy. The theoretical foundation utilized was third-wave behaviorist theories, and the conceptual framework of mindfulness. The three research questions that guided this study requested insights related to the participants' description of their experience of mindfulness techniques, and their description of SUD and anxiety symptoms after using and practicing mindfulness techniques. Yin's 5-phase thematic/content analysis was utilized to identify patterns and themes in the 10 transcribed interviews and the focus group interview, and MAXQDA 2018 was utilized to organize significant phrases and identify word frequencies. Four themes emerged: Mindfulness and physical symptoms; mindfulness and mental/emotional symptoms; mindfulness and symptoms of SUD; mindfulness and symptoms of anxiety. Findings indicated that all participants experienced significant, positive effects from mindfulness techniques with a reduction of symptoms of SUD and anxiety, and improvements in mindfulness processes. The findings from this study will assist counselors, social workers and healthcare professionals by identifying effective interventions that may reduce relapse thus improving clients' lives, treatment efforts and society. Keywords: Addiction, substance use disorder, anxiety, mindfulness.
