This thesis proposes three energy performance alternatives at the city, housing, and envelope scales in Buffalo that seek to go beyond energy efficiency and provide Buffalo residents with tools and strategies that allow them to develop individually and socially using energy as the sustenance of such development. To achieve this objective the thesis introduces the three proposals interconnected by a master plan. At the urban scale, a local energy system provides energy and economic support to communities organized according to social infrastructure. At the housing scale, a proposal for ecological building growth allows housing and small businesses to develop buildings within the urban regulations of the city. At the envelope scale, an active solar facade helps to heat the home and reduce energy costs. The results reveal that the introduction of local energy system in the city of Buffalo leads communities to achieve relative energy independence while invigorating social infrastructure. At the same time, the new growth model encourages the growth of housing and small businesses in city areas without the need to tear down existing buildings and allowing progressive modernization and expansion of the buildings. Finally, the use of active solar facades guarantees energy savings. These three proposals generate an impact on the urban structure by proposing the growth of the city as relatively independent nuclei capable of developing their social infrastructure and housing.
