THE IMPACT OF EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE ON PHYSICIAN BURNOUT AT A HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IN SOUTHWEST MICHIGANby Norma Tirado-KellenbergerPhysician Burnout has been identified as an increasing problem within the healthcare industry (Hawkins, Meritt, 2018) (Rotenstein, et al., 2018) (Rothenberger, 2017). This problem has been identified as a public health crisis or an epidemic (Jha, et al., 2019) (Rothenberger, 2017). As such, both organizational and individual solutions must be explored. This quantitative study explored the relationship between Physician Burnout and Emotional Intelligence, through an individual focus. The researcher explored the relationship between Emotional Intelligence score (EIQ) and risk of Burnout Profile (BP); the three dimensions of Burnout (EE, DP, PA) and a Self-Reported Burnout score (SRB). A random and convenience sample was used to ensure the participation of maximum physicians from the medical staff of a small health care system in southwest Michigan. Physicians were surveyed in both Burnout and Emotional Intelligence. Correlation analyses using Spearman's rho were performed to test the hypotheses. The Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) tool which measures the three dimensions of Burnout: Emotional Exhaustion (EE), High Depersonalization (DP), and feelings of Personal Accomplishment (PA) was used. Emotional Intelligence was measured using the total EIQ score of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT). The study focused on understanding the relationship between each dimension of Burnout and the Burnout Profile (defined as High Emotional Exhaustion, High Depersonalization, and Low Personal Accomplishment) to the total MSCEIT EIQ Score. Additionally, the Self-Reported Burnout Score (SRB) was also tested against EIQ.The study found significant correlations between all three dimensions of Burnout and EIQ, as well as the SRB score. It did not find any significant correlation between Burnout Profile (BP) and EIQ. Given that a negative correlation was found between EE, DP, and SRB and a positive correlation found between EIQ and PA, then it is possible that developing a physician's Emotional Intelligence skills may lead to a reduction in physician's risk of Burnout and an increase in resilience. The information gathered in this study is critical to organizations' efforts to prevent or reduce physician burnout. The study should also be considered in the development of a curriculum for medical students, residents, and general medical education for current physicians and for healthcare leaders.Since burned-out physicians may be incapable of changing the organizational factors that cause burnout in the first place, it is possible that Emotionally Intelligent physicians, can address issues that cause Burnout more effectively, and therefore avoid burning out.
