Medical innovations and expertise have paved the way for our parents to live longer but also with persistent infirmities and disease that requires family support and resources. For the aging parent, their adult children are often the ones who assume an informal caregiving role for their parents. The problem addressed by this study is understanding the quality of life that is unique to unmarried adult child sole provider parental caregivers. The purpose of this study design was the investigation of how the quality of life of unmarried adult child sole provider parental caregivers is affected when they become informal caregivers for their aging parents. The experiences of nine unmarried adult child sole provider parental caregivers consisting of seven females and two males were collected through telephone interviews. These participants' time providing caregiving to their parents ranged from 1 to 11 years with eight of the participants providing home-based care for their parent with one parent in an assisted living facility. The experience and opinions were their own. Their responses to the interview questions and any ensuing discussions during the interviews were analyzed and coded manually given the small sample population. Participant responses to the interview questions relating to quality of life were associated to physical, social, psychological, and spiritual wellbeing. The themes that emerged from the data analysis were anxiety, overwhelming, self-neglect, isolation, anger, acceptance, and personal growth. The researcher's recommendations were: 1) additional research that codifies caregiver family history to understand why and how caregivers assume their caregiver responsibility and respond to the caregiving experience; 2) longitudinal study designs to describe patterns of change in unmarried adult child caregiver quality of life over time; 3) looking at gender differences in unmarried adult child sole caregivers while taking into consideration various socio-demographic variables; and 4) differences between those unmarried adult child caregivers who seek help and support and those who do not.
