The aging patterns of Black women are complex due to their unique socio-historical experiences that date back to slavery. Older African American women experience triple jeopardy due to intersection of their age, race, and gender. The purpose of this qualitative interpretive phenomenological study was to explore the coping strategies among older Black women as they manage challenges of aging and ageism. The study focused on in-depth interviews with 15 older African American women ages 55-79. The framework for this study focused on related theories of aging, which included life course perspectives, feminism, intersectionality, and critical gerontology. Data was collected from semi-structured in-depth telephonic recorded interviews. The data was transcribed and analyzed for common themes. Four common themes were identified. Theme 1: Spirituality/Religion; Theme 2: Coping with challenges of discrimination/ stereotyping; Theme 3: Dealing with challenges of mistrust of the healthcare system; and Theme 4: Attitude/Adjusting to Change. Findings indicated that older African American women rely heavily on spirituality/religion as a core factor in their belief system of coping with aging and ageism. Participants reported that they coped by trying not to become angry with situations of discrimination, by avoidance or by being vocal and speaking up, however, relying on religion and spirituality was their key strategy. Future research should investigate methods to combat the myths and stereotypes of aging, and mitigate discrimination against minority women because of their age, gender, or race. Healthcare professionals and clinicians need to establish a better understanding of intersectionality and the challenges of aging and ageism for older African American women.
