The elevational distribution of small mammals was surveyed by three transects at Yushan National Park in subtropical central Taiwan. A sample of 1205 small mammals (ten species) was obtained. Based on this sample, I first report the sampling regime and the elevational distribution of these species with consideration of the spatial and temporal components. Second, I describe the natural history (reproductive cycle, demography, etc.) of these species. Finally, from an electrophoretic analysis of allozyme variation I depicted population genetic structure for three species of rodents (Apodemus semotus, Niviventer culturatus, and Microtus kikuchii), and test two alternative hypotheses concerning the pattern of diversification of small mammals in Southeast Asia. The distribution of small mammals showed substantial variation caused by vegetational succession, seasons, and spatial location of the transect. Tamiops maritimus occurs above 2000 m and is common at 2000-3000 m. Apodemus semotus is widely distributed from 1400-3700 m, but becomes rare below 1500 m and above 3600 m. The related Apodemus agrarius is known only from lowland localities in Taiwan and reaches no higher than 1000 m. Niviventer culturatus occurs from ca. 2000 to 3600 m whereas Niviventer coxingi occurs no higher than 2000 m and is common below 1300 m. Two species of microtine rodents also show some replacement in elevational distribution. Eothenomys melanogaster occurs from 1400 to 3000 m and Microtus kikuchii becomes abundant above 3000 m. Two shrews, Anourosorex squamipes and Soriculus fumidus, are widely distributed with elevation, but their distribution seems to be little related to elevation. Two muroids, Apodemus semotus and Niviventer culturatus, are apparently capable of breeding year-round and their breeding seasons are prolonged, whereas the microtines, Eothenomys melanogaster and Microtus kikuchii, have discrete and concentrated breeding seasons. Finally, two shrews, Anourosorex squamipes and Soriculus fumidus are both seasonal breeders, but differ somewhat in the timing of their breeding cycles. While Soriculus fumidus breeds exclusively during the dry season, Anourosorex squamipes probably reproduces in the wet season. The genetic structure of Apodemus semotus and Niviventer culturatus, which have extensive elevational distribution, is rather homogeneous and no genetic discontinuity or cline in allele frequency was detected. Conversely, isolation of populations of Microtus kikuchii on different mountain tops is quite complete as mirrored by the level of genic differentiation. A general heterozygote deficiency was observed in populations of Microtus kikuchii suggesting inbreeding in subpopulations on mountain tops that cover a small area.
