This project proposes a group counseling intervention for international students at the community college level in the United States. The focus of the group is to alleviate stress derived from the phenomenon of acculturation. The counseling group incorporates person-centered therapy and acculturation theory to support international students in the transition to living in a new culture. The growing population of international students, particularly at community college institutions and the challenges they face brought on by acculturation is discussed and examined through existing research. A review of literature provides support for complex and varied issues encountered by international students as well as the effectiveness of person-centered therapy in a group counseling setting. The 8-session, semester long counseling group is designed to support international students during their transition to living abroad and explores issues that can lead to acculturative stress. The goal of the group is to alleviate acculturative stress through setting personal goals and providing a safe space for international students to talk and grow.
