The current study compared nonverbal cues of facial expressions across three cultural-linguistic groups within emotional narrative contexts. Cultural-linguistic groups included: (1) European American monolingual English speakers born in the U.S. (2) Asian American bilingual Mandarin-English speakers born in the U.S. and (3) Asian monolingual Mandarin speakers who were born and grew up in East Asia. Participants were recorded as they viewed four different film clips that elicited the emotions of disgust, amusement, and sadness, and also as they re-told the emotional content to the examiner. Participants also rated the intensity of their emotional response on a 7-point scale. Facial movements from the recordings were manually analyzed for the type, intensity level, and length of movement, as well as by FaceReader, an automated facial analysis software. Results revealed significant group differences when comparing both the type of facial movements present and the intensity level of the participants' facial expressions during the emotional film viewing task. Results of the emotional film re-tell task and the self-report did not show significant group differences. Limitations of the study include a small sample size. Results of this study can serve to inform increased awareness and recognition of differences in nonverbal communication signals when working with culturally diverse clients in a healthcare setting during times of emotionality.
