This qualitative study investigated the experience of volitional professional supervision of ten licensed counselors who work in private practice in NJ, PA or DE. Eight of the participants were Caucasian, one Hispanic, and one Asian Indian and ranging in age between 26 to over 65. Semi-structured interviews were conducted utilizing the Conceptual Mapping Task (CMT) tool for qualitative research. Based on phenomenological methodology and data analysis four themes emerged: personal and professional growth, safe process, relational community, and structured type of meeting. Findings identified counselor benefits received from staying in professional supervision were: collaborative learning, development of ethics and boundaries, exposure to advanced counseling modalities, continued growth in self-awareness and processing countertransference. Implications for counseling and future research are discussed.
