The legacy of Jane Austen continues its over two-hundred-year-old march across time as fans, scholars, publishers, and film/tv productions keep her alive. Her fans earned the moniker of Janeites long before cultural phenomenon's like Star Trek and Star Wars elicited passionate followings. Austen's fans participate in many affirmative and transformative fan activities, including fan fiction. This study examined race and the representation of women within Austen fan fiction contained in a three-book anthology series produced by The Quill Ink. A critical discourse analysis of the 42 stores provided an interesting look into the world of fan fiction and highlighted the erasure of race and lack of feminist notions within the stories. Using Muted Group theory as a guide, this study shows how dominant discourses and tropes within a fandom can effectively silence and disembody people of color and women.
