Transportation has remained as the main contributor of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in theUnited States for several decades. In the state of New Jersey, emissions from this source arealmost twice the national average. Furthermore, Hurricane Sandy have caused agencies andauthorities within the sector to focus on recovering from this tragic event since 2012. Hence, environmental externalities impede sustainable growth for the sector in the Garden State. On theother hand, New Jersey ranks as one of the states with the highest arrest rate for marijuanapossession. With legalization, the state would receive tax revenue and would eliminate theexpenses on law enforcement. In this study, it is proposed to allocate these two economic benefitsto the transportation sector. Through an analysis of benefits and costs, the possibility ofpromoting sustainable transportation with legalized recreational marijuana market couldpromote sustainable transportation is analyzed. Due to a very likely increase in motor vehiclecrashes caused by drivers under the influence of marijuana, it is concluded that legalization wouldnot generate net economic benefits for the sector. Thanks to the inclusion of several safetyfeatures, autonomous vehicles are proved to be a solution for reducing the resulting cost ofcrashes for the state.
