Previous research and studies have determined that the difference between successful and unsuccessful sports organizations is the lack of preparation of sports managers. The lack of preparation, low pay and minimal job opportunities have forced sports management graduates into leaving the career field. The purpose of this qualitative research study is to explore needed sports management curriculum and preparation changes from the perception of sports management professionals that have graduated within the last six years. A sample of 10 participants was drawn from the population of sports managers that graduated from a sports management program at a university in Southeastern U.S. Semi-structured interviews were conducted along with site visits to gather information concerning daily operations and procedures, and curriculum change recommendations. The present study concluded that a) graduates were prepared to take on the task associated with the business aspects of the career field, but faced challenges when in came to the leadership, b) curriculum change will not help with retention rates, and c) changing the types of courses being offered could effect business and leadership preparation. Further research should consider addressing the courses students thought added value and no value to the curriculum. Futeure research should also consider the subject matter of changing sports management curriculum to be more practical and analytical for student development.
