Elder financial exploitation is a problem that affects all of society. The population of individuals over the age of 65 is estimated to be approximately 85 million by 2050 (National Center on Elder Abuse, n.d). Elderly individuals are targeted by fraudsters due to their generally large savings accounts, slowing cognitive abilities, and loneliness ("Scams and Safety: Fraud Against Seniors," n.d.). It is estimated that elder financial exploitation causes losses of approximately $2.6 million annually (MetLife Mature Market Institute, et al., 2009). The increase in communication and payment methods via digital channels has opened up new ways for scammers to reach and defraud the elderly. Senior citizens are adopting the internet and technology at an increasing rate, and society must ensure that the elderly have a clear understanding of the dangers associated with free rein connectivity. While there is a better understanding of the scams that are perpetrated via email, websites, and social media, there is a lack of data supporting the impact of advanced digital payment channels and their relationship to how fraudsters are obtaining money from the elderly. Recent legislation is helping to raise awareness and set-up programs focused around elder financial exploitation, and some private companies are also creating products specifically for seniors. However, there is a large area of information associated with how funds are transferred concerning elder financial exploitation that is missing. With technology continuing to increase, private companies and government entities need to create proper programs to understand, monitor, and mitigate elder financial exploitation.
