One rural South Atlantic community exhibited significant clusters of poverty, but identified no social service organizations specifically targeting the alleviation of poverty through adult mentoring. This qualitative action research dissertation case study explored local agency resources, practices, experiences, and perceptions around poverty and adult mentoring. The study helped identify poverty- and mentoring-focused activities in the community; community capacity for developing adult mentoring programs to address poverty; and community willingness to consider developing adult mentoring programs and services. The study consisted of in-person interviews with administrators in agencies serving adults in poverty; participants were selected by criterion and snowball sampling. A document review and individual and group feedback supported member checking of data collected through the interviews. A focus group was convened and assisted participants in creating an action plan for future community activities addressing poverty and mentoring. Findings indicated that in the selected South Atlantic rural community, there were no programs exclusively addressing poverty from a comprehensive, systems approach and no programs using adult mentoring to alleviate poverty. A wide perception among administrators was that poverty will always exist, and agencies were limited in their abilities to alleviate it through existing or new programs. Despite the limiting perceptions, focus group attendees created an action plan to advance community-wide interactions that would assist agencies to keep abreast of available resources and services and receive training to better understand local prevalence of poverty, cultural aspects of poverty, and effective techniques to respond to persons in poverty, such as mentoring.
