The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how adolescents with high functioning ASD and their parents perceive how physical exercise may influence the emotional, behavioral and social skills impairments of adolescents with high functioning ASD in a suburban Maryland community. A framework based on the theory of mind, theories based on biological/genetic and environmental factors, and the social motivation theory provided the theoretical/conceptual framework for this study. Convenience and snowball sampling were used to recruit 10 participants (five adolescent participants with ASD and five parent participants) from the area autism community. Data, which included face to face interviews with the adolescents, open-ended interview questions used in a parent questionnaire, and participant video interviews were analyzed thematically resulting in three major themes. Participants indicated perceptions that exercise may influence an emotional release of their/their child's emotional impairments. Participants responses indicated perceptions that exercise may influence their/their child's behavioral impairments as a tool for behavioral regulation. Finally, the majority of the adolescent participants and all of the parent participants indicated perceptions that exercise may influence social impairments as a mechanism for social opportunities for which they can learn and develop additional skills. All respondents indicated positive perceptions about the type of exercise (indoor cycling) used in this study to expose participants to a readily available community option for exercise.
