The goal of this cross-sectional non-experimental correlational study was to establish a relationship between childhood dog ownership and increased levels of compassion and general well-being in adulthood. The selected quantitative design involved online surveys available worldwide via websites for research participants and social media. The international sample consisted of 335 adult individuals, 177 childhood dog owners and 156 non-dog owners, whose current levels of both compassion and well-being were assessed. Previously tested in other studies, the Santa Clara Brief Compassion Scale (SCBCS) and the General Well-Being Schedule (GWBS) were employed to measure the levels of compassion and well-being. The conducted analysis of both Factorial two-way ANOVA and the individual t-tests indicated that there were significant differences in general well-being by compassion levels. The results from the F test for the multiple linear regression revealed that collectively there was a significant predictive relationship between dog ownership, compassion levels, and general well-being. When compared, frequencies of individual responses of dog owners and non-dog owners taken from the SCBCS and the GWBS indicated differences in compassion levels and levels of well-being by dog ownership; however, these were not significant enough for a correlation between the three variables to be established. Findings of the independent sample t-tests did not indicate significant differences in general well-being or compassion levels by dog ownership. Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory (1979), Bowlby's attachment theory (1982), and James-Lange theory of emotion (1884) were appropriately linked together, acknowledged and tested throughout the research. By answering the research questions, the study expanded the theories and filled gaps on a subject that had not been previously explored in quantitative research. Limitations associated with this, as well as other studies related to the topic, are discussed in detail in the final chapter of the dissertation, and recommendations for future research are presented.
