The researcher conducted this study to evaluate the current methods of designing clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) for Drug-Drug Interactions (DDIs). The research literature on the use of CDSSs for drug interactions indicated that, whereas these systems can play a critical role in revealing drug interactions, the results of the implemented systems are not satisfactory and there is a lack of determined strategy for designing drug interaction CDSSs to facilitate usability. The purpose of this generic qualitative inquiry was to explore how organizational structure, function, process, and environment affect some of the design issues of CDSSs used to prevent DDIs. The study's theoretical framework included general systems theory along with soft system methodology (SSM). The target population included IT and project managers involved either in the design process or in research projects concerning the design methods of those systems. The researcher employed a primary qualitative method using purposeful sampling. A total of 14 participants participated in discussions as part of this study. The research design for this study-a generic qualitative inquiry analysis-included a combination of structured and semi-structured interviews. The data analysis phase has been performed in conjunction with data collection to draw the attention to analysis in proportion to the collection as the study progresses. According to the responses of the participants, the findings revealed that the current problems related to CDSSs for DDIs fall into four categories: interface problems, content problems, software capabilities, and hardware requirements. Factors that contribute to the successful implementation of CDSSs for DDIs include the enhancements of health delivery systems, organizational arrangements, funding mechanisms, project management, selected practical models, and knowledge management. The main design paradigm behind this study is to examine the current challenges of CDSSs to offer healthcare providers such as specialists, nurses, and pharmacists a system which can facilitate their daily routines and increase the quality of healthcare services they provide. Finally, study participants mentioned that strategies for arranging the structure of the design organization of CDSSs for DDIs are essential and should be a priority for project managers. Recommendations for future research include first studying the broader population of the design team to see if the design approaches are still causing performance problems. Afterward, researchers may conduct a quantitative study to determine the proper architecture for each type of CDSS and finally examine the drug interaction algorithm to provide helpful warnings for the specific patient.
