The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to address the problem that it was unknown how new Fire Fighters understand and apply the most prevalent 2011-2015 structural National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP) recommendations while in the performance of their duties mitigating emergency situations. The theories that provided the theoretical foundation for this study were Personal Knowledge theory and the Recognition Primed Decision-Making (RPD) model of Naturalistic Decision-Making (NDM) theory. The research questions were first, how do new Fire Fighters understand the most prevalent 2011-2015 structural NIOSH FFFIPP recommendations while in the performance of their duties mitigating emergency situations, and second, how new Fire Fighters apply the most prevalent 2011-2015 structural NIOSH FFFIPP recommendations while in the performance of their duties mitigating emergency situations. This study's design coded the prevalence of 2011-2015 structural NIOSH recommendations surveyed 26 new Fire Fighters, and interviewed 12 new Fire Fighters (assigned to the operations division of a metropolitan fire service agency in Central Arizona). The research found the 26 surveyed new Fire Fighters had an 85% average for he understanding of surveyed NIOSH recommendations and the 12 interviewed new Fire Fighters indicated limited understanding of the most prevalent NIOSH recommendations in over 21% of their responses (indicated greater than limited understanding in almost 79% of their responses).
