The nature of how the dynamics of gait in children develops is largely unknown throughout the developmental years. It is widely accepted that the gait of children differs from adult gait but matures sometime around the age of 8 years old. Much research has been conducted to determine developmental delays and pathological gait in children, but little investigation has been focused on the healthy trajectories of gait variability in children. This is especially the case with the investigation of nonlinear gait variability. To better understand the developmental trajectory of gait variability, both linear and nonlinear, we investigated cross-sectionally, the gait of children between the ages of 2 and 10. To better understand the sensitivity of children to the constraint of footwear, we also examined children's gait while wearing different types of footwear. Our results indicate that there are age dependent developmental trajectories for gait variability in children. We found that both linear and nonlinear gait variability for spatiotemporal (stride time and stride length), as well as nonlinear gait variability for joint angles was age dependent. Interestingly, the spatiotemporal variability decreased with age, but the joint angle variability increased with age. These results point to a refining of gait with age where children's gait is becoming more precise but also more complex with age. We also found that footwear plays a role within the development of children's gait. Younger children are more susceptible to gait variability changes due to footwear than are older children. This makes us ask the question as to what types of footwear are most developmentally appropriate for children, especially in the younger more sensitive years.
