This phenomenological research was conducted to explore the definition of transgenerational trauma (TGT), its effects on daily life, and recommendations for addressing its effects from an Australian Aboriginal perspective. Indigenous psychologists around the world conducting research on TGT have forwarded diverse findings concerning how TGT is characterized. Indigenous psychologists agree that indigenous populations have suffered and endured through very similar traumatic experiences including mass violence and overt and institutionalized racism most likely due to colonization practices. The differences in findings and conclusions occurred when determining whether TGT resulted in negative behavioral patterns or resilient behaviors. Purposeful sampling was utilized to conduct face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with seventeen adult participants from three different generations who had experienced or witnessed TGT. Results of this research found that all of the interviewed participants were able to describe emotional and behavioral characteristics of TGT while only twelve of the seventeen were able to definitively define TGT. Daily effects of TGT were discussed in terms of experiencing generations of mass violence that contributed to emotional, psychological, and physical problems within the Aboriginal community. Participants forwarded recommendations for healing effects of TGT using education, community give back, and reconnecting to their Aboriginal culture and heritage. Results of this study will contribute to a better understanding of Aboriginal culture and provide access to partnerships with Australian Aboriginals in order to establish and inform culturally appropriate applications for educational, socio-cultural, and mental healthcare policies as well as additional participatory action research projects.
