Engineering projects or natural physical changes can impact the health of coastal ecosystems. In areas lacking sufficient documentation of water quality parameters, these impacts are difficult to quantify. This study develops a model, ECHO (coastal ECosystem Health assessment model using Oysters as the indicator species) which can indicate a measure of coastal ecosystem health based on results of any three-dimensional hydrodynamic model. This model identifies oyster survival, growth, reproduction, self-sustaining, and dead zones based on their capacity to support oysters during different stages of their life cycles. Since the oyster is an ecosystem engineer, the zones delineated by this model can represent the potential areas in which ecosystem health can be sustained or improved if oysters are present or introduced. The zones are delineated based on water depth, speed, salinity, temperature and vertical mixing. Vertical mixing, quantified by Richardson number, is used as a surrogate measure of replenishment of dissolved oxygen and food. This study examines how using Richardson number which considers density and shear effects would better indicate vertical movement of particles in complex tidal environments. This study also demonstrates the use of ECHO as a predictive tool by applying it to two possible physical changes induced by engineering projects (i.e., the increased amount of freshwater and bathymetric changes). Since the locations and sizes of the oyster zones before and after the physical changes can help compare important features of the coastal region, ECHO produces output in a more concise format to assess the overall impacts of the changes.
