This thesis examines the sexual scripts presented for gay men in films in the LGBTQ category on Netflix using qualitative content analysis. This research draws on scripting theory, which asserts that scripts presented in the media have a direct impact on the social scripts used by individuals to understand and navigate their lives. This study is concerned with sexual scripts presented to gay men in LGBTQ Netflix films. Mass media is an important agent of sexual socialization for this community since alternative sources of sexual socialization are lacking. This thesis finds that the sexual scripts present within these films were both limited and problematic. Sexual scripts for non-heterosexual sex mimicked common heterosexual sexual scripts and reinforced a narrow model for queer relationships. This also contributed to an inaccurate representation of gay sex and reinforced stereotypes surrounding men who have sex with men, including factors such as drug usage and hook-up culture.
