Trees in agricultural landscapes provide important habitat corridors and food sources for birds and other wildlife. Isolated trees, riparian forests, forest patches, and living fences located on private lands constitute the majority of this tree cover. How landowners manage these trees is influenced by global economic forces as well as local socio-economic conditions and knowledge. This thesis research, based in southern Costa Rica, frames four different landowner types' socio-economic perceptions and knowledge related to trees within the framework of ecosystem services. We found that landowners are aware and proud of the role that their land plays in providing wildlife habitat and resources, but are primarily motivated by economic incentives. Understanding which ecosystem services are favored by landowners and which ecosystem services are less known among landowners may inform the development of outreach and management plans that are more likely to be adopted. This research also increases understanding of how landowners react to low and volatile prices in global coffee prices. While landowners are interested in increasing productivity or finding alternative crops, they are hampered by limited market access and rare, often negative, interactions with government representatives.
