Since 1950 the Greater Binghamton Area has experienced a decrease in its population at an average rate of 2.3% decennially due to the dissolving of the IBM corporation that was once rooted in the city. This era marked the beginning of what would continue to be a large exit of thousands from the Binghamton area in search of employment. With the initial outflow of residents, decade after decade has followed suit and as a by-product the economic climate of the area has deteriorated taking businesses, the housing market and investment along with it. This trend continues to occur every year with the graduation of intelligent Binghamton University students versed in fields ranging from Arts, to Business, Medicine and everything in between, leaving the area where they gain their education in search of opportunity. This "brain drain" can be directly attributed to the lack of employment rich industry in the Greater Binghamton Area. This study works to analyze the growth of the Greater Binghamton Area also known as the GBA, through the Central Place Theory principles and concepts created by Walter Christaller that quantify the growth and development of towns by way of assessing human behavior and the fundamentals of economics. It is hypothesized that through the student population threshold increase, the attraction of new and higher order goods and services as well as business and industry can be attracted to the GBA. What is hoped to be achieved can be seen as a maturation of the college town into an area in which graduated students can find employment in an industry rich location, termed the Young Professional Oriented District. This assessment of the GBA's central place status and extrapolation of the areas potential for maturation is assessed in the following sections throughout this study.
