Written Project: Machinations: Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra is a programmatic work that is inspired by the characters portrayed in the film Dangerous Liaisons (1988) and their function in the plot of revenge. This concerto is cast in three movements that represent each role: Movement I exhibits the volatile personality of the main manipulator juxtaposed to her refined public persona as they begin to intrude on each other, Movement II addresses the internal struggle of the victim that is both a manipulator but is also being manipulated, which is the desire to evolve into a kind-hearted being while unable to escape the main manipulator's control. Finally, Movement III demonstrates the characteristics of the innocent as they are victimized by the two devious manipulators.II.
