Leisure participation plays an important role in health promotion in the older adult population. This study aimed to investigate the multilevel factors that are associated with leisure participation and examine the relative importance of these different levels of factor collectively in explaining leisure participation in Taiwanese older adults.A cross-sectional design was used. Data were collected across all districts of Taipei City with 160 community-dwelling participants age 65 and older. Three measures of leisure participation were obtained from the Leisure Participation Checklist, including (1) variety: total number of activities in which an individual participates, (2) frequency: average number of times in which an individual participates in activities, and (3) duration: total amount of time spent on activities in the past three months. Guided by the Social Ecological Model, the multilevel factors that were examined are intrapersonal-level factors (i.e., demographics, self-rated health, and depressive symptoms [measured by CES-D-C]), interpersonal-level factors (i.e., living arrangement and social support [measured by LSNS-R-C]), and community-level factors (i.e., availability, accessibility, and affordability of activities/transportation, and social inclusion). Data were analyzed using hierarchical multiple linear regressions. The results showed that in the physical type of leisure, older adults with better self-rated health, lower levels of depressive symptoms, better social support, older age, and being male had higher levels of leisure participation in the variety, frequency, or duration aspect. In the cognitive type of leisure, better self-rated health and a higher level of education were associated with a higher level of participation in the variety or duration aspect. No associations were found between community-level factors and leisure participation, nor between any level of factors and frequency of participation in the cognitive type of leisure. Most findings agree with previous studies and suggest that intrapersonal-level factors play a more important role in predicting leisure participation compared with other levels of factors. Understanding how factors relate to three measures of participation can assist practitioners in tailoring interventions to enhance leisure participation based on individual patterns. In the future, emphasis is needed with regard to selecting relevant community-level factors based on the target population. Further refinement of instruments used to measure leisure participation is also needed.
