Breakthroughs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) change the way we live our lives. While these breakthroughs can find the cure for the most lethal diseases, every change carries heavy social implications. Unlike previous revolutions of humankind, this one is mainly carried out by the scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. The founder of Facebook inc., Mark Zuckerberg, once preached to newbie innovators: "Move fast and break things. Unless you are breaking stuff, you are not moving fast enough." However, this start-up approach advocated by many other tech-industry leaders, could be very harmful to the delicate fabric of society. Recently, Facebook admitted and apologized for its failure to identify and block the abuse of its platform by users spreading disinformation that caused murder, rape and forced migration in Myanmar. Socially responsible innovation depends on three pillars: education, diversity and deliberate civic participation. This thesis utilized data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey, September 2017: Volunteering and Civic Life Supplement. Using Logit regression to test the hypothesis that workers in STEM occupations are less civically engaged and suffer shortage in all the three ahead. The findings of the thesis approve the hypothesis and show that people who work in a STEM occupation are less likely to participate in civic engagement activities, such volunteer, vote in a local election, attend a public meeting and engage with others. In addition, the thesis shows that workers in STEM occupations with academic education tend to be even less civically engaged. This thesis aims to improve the understanding of the causes of reckless innovation and help decision makers in the public and the private sectors to design programs and policies to address the problem.
