The purpose of this research paper was to examine the Federal Bureau of Investigation's investigative methods and initiatives relating to child pornography and the legal challenges surrounding such efforts. The paper addresses the following: the technological methods utilized by the FBI to combat online child pornography, how technology has impacted the bureau's investigations of child pornography over the Internet, and the legal and constitutional issues which have arisen regarding the FBI's methods. This paper seeks to bring to light the issues, often complicated, which are involved; to raise awareness of the type of work the FBI performs; and to illustrate how deeply technology has impacted law enforcement and its efforts to combat these heinous crimes. This paper identifies network investigative techniques (NITs) and additional tactics utilized by the FBI to uncover, track, and investigate producers, distributors, and procurers of online child pornography. The Internet has not only aided those participating in this type of crime but has also assisted law enforcement in uncovering criminals and infiltrating networks and areas across the cyber realm, such as chat rooms, providing cover for their activities. The legal and constitutional issues often prove to be gray areas for the FBI and the courts, as the law struggles to keep pace with technology. Keywords: Cybersecurity, Professor Duane Corbo, hacking, Fourth Amendment, Rule 41b, the onion router (Tor), the dark web.
