Speech sound development in children is the foundation upon which oral language abilities are built. Furthermore, an understanding of the complex process of speech sound development is essential to identifying individuals who do not meet those patterns and may be exhibiting speech sound disorders (SSDs) (Bernthal, Bankson & Flipsen, 2009; Bland-Stewart, 2003). While knowledge and resources about speech sound development, assessment and treatment is available within the field of speech-language pathology (SLP) for monolingual English speakers and specific bilingual populations (e.g., Spanish-English speakers), there is a paucity of necessary knowledge and resources about speech sound development and disorders in speakers of international varieties of English and Creole languages. Consequently, there is a need for the creation of knowledge about these understudied language varieties in order to assist speech-language pathologists SLPs in providing culturally and linguistically competent services. This dissertation presents three manuscripts aimed at filling the aforementioned knowledge gap, specifically for speakers of Trinidadian English (TrE), an international variety of English, and Trinidadian English Creole (TrinEC). The first manuscript describes the phonological characteristics of TrE and TrinEC and outlines clinical considerations for SLPs. This description reveals that there are differences in the production of consonants, vowels and prosodic elements when TrE and TrinEC are compared to each other and to varieties of English that are native to the United States (U.S.). The second manuscript is a study that utilizes a cross-sectional research design to examine the pattern of consonant sound development in typically developing children who live in Trinidad and who speak TrE and TrinEC. Results of study two revealed that the profile of development for consonant sounds, based on the participants in the study, was different to profiles of consonant sound development that have been developed using other linguistic groups. The final study was a cross-cultural review and adaptation of four commonly used speech sound assessments. Using expert review, the instructions, items and illustrations of the four assessments were critically examined. The results of the review demonstrated that while the instructions of the assessments were unbiased, the items and illustrations presented with potential cultural and/or linguistic bias. Adaption of the potentially biased items to establish linguistic, cultural and functional equivalence was then undertaken.
