The increase of prison violence in America has become a major area of concern to prison inmates and administrators. Inmate violence exists in many forms, including but not limited to fighting, rioting, and inmate on inmate sexual assaults. It has been argued that inmate on inmate sexual assaults may have already reached epidemic portions. This study examines whether inmates believe that prison inmate-on-inmate sexual assaults are occurring in prison, whether inmates believe that inmates that engage in inmate-on-inmate sexual assaults should be prosecuted, examines the impact of rape myths on reporting sexual assaults and offers a grounded theory on prison sexual assaults. The grounded theory was developed through a six step process that examined: (a) the pre-prison causal conditions that established the foundation for the grounded theory, (b) the phenomena that arose from the pre-prison causal conditions, (c) the context in which survival and coping strategies were developed, (d) the intervening conditions that influence survival and coping strategies, (e) the strategies for surviving and coping with prison sexual assaults, and (f) the consequences of the strategies that were developed for survival and coping with prison sexual assaults.
