The Senior Woman Administrator (SWA) is the highest-ranking female involved in the management of an intercollegiate athletic department. The NCAA (2018b) created the SWA position in effort to encourage and promote the involvement of female administrators in the intercollegiate athletic departments' and conference offices' decision-making processes. Despite efforts to include women in athletics, Black women represent only 4.2% of assistant athletic directors (ADs), 4.2% of associate ADs, and 2% of head Ads among NCAA Division I (D-I) intercollegiate athletic departments. A dearth of research exists that has investigated Black women's perspectives with regard to their experiences as senior-level administrators in intercollegiate sport (McDowell & Cunningham, 2009; McDowell & Carter-Francique, 2017; Price, Dunlap, & Eller, 2017). The purpose of this study was to gain insight into the personal, academic, and vocational experiences of Black women who have served as the SWAs in NCAA D-I intercollegiate athletic departments. Black feminist thought served as a lens through which the participants' experiences were examined. This study utilized semi-structured interviews to examine the experiences of nine (n=9) Black SWAs in NCAA D-I intercollegiate athletic departments. Study of the Black women's personal, academic, and vocational experiences allowed for the emergence of several themes. A total of nine themes emerged: 1) "Athletics is a lifestyle," a holistic lifestyle, 2) keen sense of awareness, 3) pouring into others, 4) empowerment equals high satisfaction, 5) education is leverage, 6) men serve a central role in the sport experience, 7) the landscape is improving at a "snail's pace," 8) forewarning and reality, and 9) self-determination is a means of survival. Additional subthemes were presented to permit the researcher to focus on specific notable elements of overarching themes. Per those overarching themes, implications and recommendations are provided to better address the needs of an historically underrepresented population in intercollegiate athletic administration.
